Difference Between FCL and LCL Shipping Methods!
We have already written a post about the differences between FTL and LTL shipping methods. These shipping methods are used in road freight transportation; however, sea freight uses different methods, referred to as FCL and LCL. Now you can learn about the differences between these as well!
The two terms mean almost the same as FTL and LTL in road freight transportation, but in this case we are not talking about trucks, but containers. We distinguish four ISO standard sizes: 8, 8.5, 20 and 40-foot containers. Extra-high containers are referred to as 9.5-foot containers, and there are also 10-foot containers. However, the standard sizes are 20 and 40 feet, so in many places only these types of containers can be transported.
FCL stands for Full Container Load, which is commonly translated as “full container load.” LCL stands for Less than Container Load, meaning “less than a full container load.” In sea freight transportation, the freight forwarding company and the customer also need to decide which shipping method to choose, as this decision greatly influences the final cost, the time required for transportation and safety.
Advantages and disadvantages of FCL, or Full Container Load:
The most cost-effective shipping method if you are transporting more than 15 cubic metres
Cheaper than air freight, although considerably slower
Faster than LCL shipping, because only one customer’s cargo is in the container, so there is no need for additional handling
The risk of damage is considerably lower, as the container does not need to be unloaded or opened several times
The disadvantage of FCL shipping is that it is not cost-effective below 15 cubic metres.
Advantages of LCL, or Less than Container Load:
The most cost-effective method if you cannot fill an entire container
Cheaper than air freight, although considerably slower
The best method when smaller quantities of cargo need to be delivered
Smaller orders are cheaper, require less investment and provide more options for carriers
Disadvantages of LCL shipping:
More expensive than FCL when calculated on a price-per-cubic-metre basis
Possible delays, as additional shipments may be added to the container
Possible delays due to customs clearance, because if the documentation of one shipment is not in order, the entire container cannot be transported further
Increased risk of damage during transshipment
